Matilija Magic ~ The Delaney & Bonnie Project

About the Magic

This is the story of a couple who hit the worldwide rock circuit and taught a few bored, super-rich, genteel, white British musicians how to roll up their sleeves and make their music down and dirty, more soulful and honest.  Four decades later, their impact remains.

Through interviews and the use of rare (and largely unseen) historical film footage, photos and other archival material, Matilija Magic will depict the synergy and magic of D&B and how together, their sound attracted some of the best musicians in the world to join them on stage including: the Queen of Rock-N-Roll Tina Turner and blues guitarist, Eric Clapton, both intimately involved with D&B, as well as Little Richard, Leon Russell, Dave Masson, Dr. John, Sly Stone, Greg Allman, Bonnie Bramlett, B.B. King, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Kenny Gradney, Joe Cocker, Rita Coolidge, Bekka Bramlett, Glen Campbell, Jim Gordon, Sandi Blue Sky, Jim Keltner, Al Bell, Taj Mahal, Duck Dunn, Elton John, Jim Stewart, Ginger Baker, Keith Richards, Yoko Ono, Jimmy Messina, Kenny Loggins, Paul Williams, Bobby Keys, Black Crows, Mentor Williams, Sam Clayton, and many others. Most of whom, have already committed to sharing their stories about D&B and the magnitude of the contributions to their lives and the world of music.

Journalists, writers and historians of American music and radio history will also be interviewed to provide sufficient context and discussion of the issues engendered by, and events surrounding the desegregation of American radio and the music it was allowed to play.  Among others, acclaimed authors Joshua Zeitz and Dr. Peniel Joseph will discuss the political and historical impact of D&B, their music and their ability to blend gospel, blues, country and rock music in a way that allowed them to pioneer music’s ability to cross boundaries.  By the time the tour bus stops at the White Castle for the last time, you’ll have laughed, cried, booed, cheered, burned your thumb with a hot lighter and had one of the best experiences of your life.

Matilija Magic is one of the most interesting and unique behind the scene looks into music history. A documentary that will change the way you hear music, forever.

Outsiders, they refuse, they refuse to help us
And they down us, they put us down
Living the way we do
But when you’re born, the child, of a poor man
They say the ghetto, is the only place, for you

If there’s such a thang, as hear after
Lord I’m satisfied, satisfied, there will  be…
When they build
When they build, a New Jerusalem
There won’t be, no more ghetto, for me
I say, there will be, no more ghetto, for me
